Thank You, Duncraft!!
For years I have been trying to stop squirrels, chipmunks, and raccoons from climbing the wooden post that supports our feeders. The post we have is a 4" X 4" originally part of a feeder support put up by my father about 40 years ago. It is a true 4 X 4 from before lumber sizes were adjusted. So attaching this baffle was an exercise in manual dexterity and determination. The description provided by Duncraft clearly states the post size it is manufactured to fit, but I never thought to measure our post. We attached the baffle to the post a little over 4 ft from the ground so that the bottom of the baffle is at least 6" below the bottom of the lowest-hanging feeder. So far the squirrels that have tried to get past the baffle from the ground have been unsuccessful. They reach the underside of the baffle and cannot jump over it or reach the edges (22" diameter) to pull themselves past it. It is too high to jump on top of it, but even if they did, they would slide off and fall to the ground. Our squirrels have stopped trying to climb the post, settling for whatever seeds fall from the feeders. Our birds now eat in peace and I don't have to fill the feeders so often. I do have 2 caged, squirrel-proof feeders, but now even my open, non-squirrel proof feeders are safe. I know this system is not bear-proof, moderately successful against the more intelligently-challenged raccoons, but TOTALLY effective against both red and gray squirrels, and chipmunks. If you are having trouble keeping small critters from emptying or destroying your bird feeders, you might want to try this baffle first!
