Bat Houses

Bats are Natures' insect control

Bats are Nature's insect control

Range of BatsThe evidence suggests that a typical bat colony can make a difference to homeowners who want to use natural biological insect control as part of their program.

If you want to start a bat colony on your property, look for evidence of bats already roosting nearby. You have a good chance of enticing them to your bat houses if they already live, or are attempting to live, in buildings near you.

Bat houses needs to be in a warm place.  Placing a bat house in trees may hide the sunlight and attract bats that naturally roost in trees.  The most successful bat houses are mounted on a pole, chimney, or on a building at a height of 12 feet or more with 6-10 hours of sun exposure.  Bat houses should face a clearing and a southwest direction.  Houses mounted on buildings tend to be the most predator safe.  Bats also need to be within a quarter mile of water that provides an ample food source.
