Woodpeckers love it
Draw the woodpeckers to this great look a like bark. Easy to use with this spreadable suet, or create your own. I like to spread some even on the bark as well.Non clingers, have a harder time getting the suet on the exterior sides, which makes the food last longer. Weather can't get to it much either. Very happy with this purchase.

Pileated woodpeckers love it
This feeder really attracts the large woodpeckers and for this I will overlook the fact that other birds can eat the suet up to an inch or so deep into the feeder. I don't buy the suet slices. Instead, I slice up 1/4 inch pieces of suet in its square plastic container and lay them lengthwise in the open sandwich, about 1/2 inch from the edges and screw the top layer on. Then I put it on the floor and stand on it so the suet spreads out. I the tighten the screws and shove the excess suet back into the feeder. Now that I read this it sounds like a lot of trouble, but I don't mind. The Pileaters are worth it.

Starlings CAN get into this
Woodpeckers love this feeder and Grackles and other large birds are deterred--that is ALL except Starlings!! They have figured out how to stand on the narrow lip in the slot between the halves where the suet is and balance by putting the other foot on the bolt on the screw that holds the feeder toegther. Nothing angers me more than seeing a Starling perched on this feeder eating what should belong the the little Downy Woodpeckers. The Starkings can only reach so deep and the larger Woodpeckers like the Hairy and Red belly can reach what is left but I do not like feeding my expensive sandwich suet to STARLINGS!!!! If the manufacturrer could figure out a way to make the product unperchable by Starlings--it would be PERFECT!!
