Help birds survive bitter winter nights

Cold, windy nights threaten birds’ survival, robbing them of calories and energy. During a cold night, birds can lose between 12 to 15 percent of their body weight. Help the birds stay warm!

Our roosting house provides your birds with a draft-free shelter, where they can escape from wet and cold conditions. Since the entrance is at the bottom, the warm air rises to the top where birds huddle together to conserve body heat. This allows your birds to save their energy and survive another frigid cold winter’s night. In spring, convert into a nesting box by taking out the ladder and flipping the front panel. Made from Eastern white pine. 7 x 9 x 13 inches tall. Includes two screws for mounting to any flat surface.

  • 1-1/2 inch entry hole with metal portal protector
  • Enjoy watching more birds seek shelter in your yard
  • Includes roosting ladder, which can be removed for nesting season
  • Easy to convert into a nesting box in the spring
  • Made in the USA, available exclusively at Duncraft

Very happy with purchases. Well made.
These are beautiful boxes. This nothing to do with the boxes but the stinking house sparrows took all three of them over within a week, so we are trying to figure out how to deal with that. It's fun watching them being used, just wish they were occupied by our native birds. As a new birder my only question about these for Spring is when you invert the door, does it create a vent at the top? I thought nest boxes were supposed to be vented so it doesn't get too hot for the baby birds?

The birds will love you
I didn't want to put screws in the trees, so I bought two of these boxes and just tied them with string to the trees, pointing southeast. They are holding up just fine, and are very nice-looking. the chickadees, titmice and goldfinches go in there, and I imagine they are sleeping there. How often do you have to buy roosting houses? Wonderful box in all seasons!
We purchased two of these boxes three years ago. In winter, smaller birds spend their nights in there, perched on the ladder, for shelter from especially cold nights. In the early spring, we invert the front panel so that they can use it for nesting. Those two boxes have been used for both every single year (at the moment, we have a downy woodpecker building a nest in one, and a tufted titmouse building a nest in the other). It's so much fun to watch them both seeking warmth in the winter, and hatching young in the spring!

Excellent all seasons!
We have seen small birds going in and out of the box during the winter, so I suspect they are 'overnighting' there. In the spring and summer, several species of birds have built their nests and hatched their young in the box.
