I bought this in April of 2014
I just want to encourage any doubters. I've had this Duncraft feeder hanging in a tree for 3 months shy of 10 years! Unbelievably, it is still feeding the squirrels just fine! Now, our squirrels (and I do believe they sent out invitations the first month we had it because we have the squirreliest backyard in the neighborhood) for some reason like to chew on the material this is made out of. So the feeder no longer has any nice smooth edges - they all are quite sharp with many points. There is also less of the material to support the glass jar. Oh, the jar did NOT last 10 years, but replacements have kept us going (we also have raccoons that climbed the tree, unfastened the hanger and dropped it on the ground 10 feet below. I found a different way to hang it after that.) Anyway, the squirrels love this thing - we put whole peanuts in it and sometimes sunflower seeds, other whole nuts, etc. So if you are worried about quality of this item, don't worry. I don't think it will ever destruct until the squirrels eat all of the material away from the jar! (I have a ground bird feeder made from the same material that I use to feed white millet to the doves, etc. The squirrels have eaten at least an inch of the material away all the way around as well as eating some of the material off of the legs of the feeder! Guess they are keeping their teeth trimmed.) Just wanted to let others know that this is a very good representative of the quality of Duncraft made feeders. I highly recommend and if you desire, I can ship you some starter squirrels to train your local ones on how to eat the food as well as the feeder - no I really won't ship squirrels, your squirrels will figure it out. Took our squirrels about 2 minutes to get into the jar after we first hung it - they politely waited until we got back in our house before they began dining. I've enjoyed watching the babies learn to climb in as the years go by. Squirrels are so much fun to watch. Scurry, eat, scurry, bury, scurry, eat, chase each other around and up and down the trees, repeat. This feeder will let you enjoy your squirrels - much more entertaining than any TV show I've seen in the past 10 years.

I would buy this again!
I was feeling very sorry for the squirrels, tunneling through a foot of snow just to find a seed the birds had kicked out of their feeders. So I ordered this feeder which arrived this week and have been delighted to watch the squirrels. They were terrified at first that we would kick them out of it. Now they are climbing right inside the jar while another is hanging upside down on the wire waiting their turn. Excellent choice and beautiful quality!

great squirrel and small animal feeder
I've had this for a few years. The squirrels figured it out very quickly, but not as quickly as the jays. I recommend using it with shell-less food, otherwise the shells start to clog it up. The clear glass jar is very thick and strong, I've dropped it a few times and it is no worse for the wear. The glass allows sunlight in 360 degrees preventing mold (important in a very humid climate), even though it hangs in partial shade. I hang my mine from a small branch near a very large limb, which allows the squirrels to straddle the space from the limb to the feeder. Squirrels have no trouble jumping right in and feeding while sitting inside. They also have no trouble turning it around if the opening is away from the limb. Jays easily perch on the lip to eat. The food the squirrels kick out is quickly eaten by the doves, jays, and other squirrels. The only downside--I wish it wasn't grey. It would look better if it was brown or dark green.

Entertaining!
This is a solid feeder and it's very practical if you don't have a tree that you can mount the traditional wooden/jar feeder to. I don't really have trees but my neighbors do and their big pine tree sits on the property line. I have a cedar feeder hanging on one side and then I got this jar feeder to hang on the other side. We share the cost of food. The cedar feeder is really a bird feeder so the large in-shell walnuts don't come out of the feeder opening. So I got this hanging jar feeder a couple of weeks ago, waited for a new nut order to come in and then hung it up last week. We've only had squirrels for two months. I photograph squirrels and my mom thinks the ones I feed found out where I lived! I ran out and got feeders after the one appeared and not only has he (AJ) stayed but we have two others that visit the feeder, too. Well, our AJ got himself stuck in the feeder today! It was really quite comical. I thought I was going to have to help him out but he somehow managed to do a full 360 inside the jar, kicking out a whole bunch of nuts that went flying in every direction! That's probably the only downside, and I wouldn't really call it a con, but there's nothing solid for the squirrel to perch next to the opening of the jar (like a wooden/jar feeder that's mounted, the squirrel can perch on the wooden part of the feeder) bec it hangs on a branch and swings. The squirrel has to sit on top of the jar (like in the Duncraft photo). AJ managed to get out of the jar without falling, he clung to the bottom of the feeder and then leaped for the tree trunk but I started to think it was cumbersome for the little guys. The times I've seen them get nuts out of the opening was from perched on top. I tried to hang it on a thin branch that was close to one of the larger branches so that they could access it easier but it's just the way the tree is and it's not really possible. Anyway, they're quite acrobatic so it can be done and fortunately, the jar is large enough that our little AJ was able to turn himself around. He's a young squirrel and I suspect the other two who visit the feeders probably wouldn't even fit inside the jar the way AJ did! All in all, I would recommend this product. The quality/workmanship is excellent.

Squirrels love it!
I bought this to stop battling the squirrels at the bird feeders. I gave them some of their own feeders & they happily use them. I don't hang this feeder. I simply leave it on my deck. The squirrels can easily get to the food & it's large enough for them. Some squirrels have sat in there to eat. It's fun to sit & watch them. It's easy to empty & clean, then set out with more food. The plus of feeding the squirrels their own food is that they're not scattering & wasting the seed they don't want at the bird feeders.
