Recommended, but not Jay-proof
my Chicadees enjoy eating black oil sunflower seeds from this feeder, but larger birds such as Jays eventually figure out how to defeat it. They cling to the opening with their feet, steady themselves with their tails against the feeder, and are thus able to insert their beaks and shovel the seed in! Also, squirrels sometimes succeed in knocking the feeder down by pulling on the hanging chain. Nevertheless, I do recommend this feeder, and have used it for decades.

Took Some Time, But Birds Now Love It
Took my smaller birds almost a month to start using it for some reason. Was almost ready to take it down, then they started using it, and it is now a mainstay in my bird feeding arsenal. Really does give the smaller birds a food option when they are pushed away from other food sources by pigeons and other larger birds. You do have to take off its screws to clean it well, but that is not enough to keep this little "niche" feeder from being a nice addition to the mix.

Entertaining for both birds and humans.
I ordered these because I live in a city with lots of pigeons. These feeders do a great job attracting small birds, finches, sparrows, small doves. I really enjoy watching them figure out how to get the seed. So far no pigeons and large doves. The design that keeps the larger birds out also makes them a little diffucult to fill. I solve the problem with a makeshift rolled sheet of paper that I use as a funnel. I support both the bird feeder and funnel in my left while I fill with my right. I find rocking the feeder back and forth gets the seeds past the divider into the top half. I would buy these feeders again.

Favorite feeder for over 25 years
I use fishing swivels to assist the motion which defeats many large birds from using the feeder. I also suspend it with heavy monofilament line or very thin wire to help deter squirels.
