This product was missing plexiglass piece.....useless without it
I received this kit without a front window. Food spills all over the place. Duncraft can’t fix it, and the manufacturer won’t ship a replacement. Looks like I get to make my own plexiglass window. Poor support.....look elsewhere.

Merchant Response

The manufacturer was having difficulties due to COVID at their facility. We were happy to work with this customer and issue a partial refund for the inconvenience.

Tons of fun, but questionable quality.
I bought my first Metal Squirrel Feeder and was so happy with it for the 4 1/2 years it lasted before a raccoon got into it several times. The heavier weight caused the hooks that hold it on the tree to bend and eventually break off, sending it crashing to the ground one night where the lid broke off. As others have mentioned, some of the enamel coating had chipped off and it was getting rusty in spots, but it still worked fine up to that point. I bought my second one about six months ago and would bring it in every night to avoid raccoon wreckage but a couple of days ago I noticed one of the rivets that attach the lid to the hinge had broken and the lid was opening crookedly. Then came the day when a squirrel pushed up the lid where it twisted on the one remaining rivet and stayed open, allowing all the blue jays and magpies access to the newly-filled box of peanuts. My handy husband is hopeful that he can fix it, but I can't help thinking the rivets must be getting flimsy or this one was defective. If he can't fix it, I will be back to purchase another one and give it one last chance because everyone knows the third time is the charm. Our squirrels love the "nut house" and when I hang it up in the morning, the clang of the lid is their morning alarm clock. Even when they aren't eating, there's often one sprawled across the roof napping on it's full belly. I would recommend this to a friend, but with a warning that it's probably not going to last a lifetime....however, I used to spend twice the price for a concert ticket that lasted one evening. Sitting on the front porch reading and watching the squirrels is now my favorite entertainment and ~$50 for 4 1/2 years - or even 6 months (I guess) - is a worthwhile deal to me.

If you like feeding squirrels, buy this feeder!
I bought this feeder for my boyfriend who has a lot of squirrels in his neighborhood. He mounted it on a pole in his side garden. We put shell intact peanuts in it. The squirrels love it! We love watching the squirrels! The shells from the peanuts make a bit of a mess, but it works with the location. We also have attracted the blue jays to the house, and even ducks nibbling on the leftovers underneath it. The "nuthouse" has created a whole new feeding system in the backyard. I was worried about the noise from the squirrels opening the roof and having it "bang" closed, but it's not that loud. Our neighbors love it as well, a few of our dog walking neighbors stop to watch the antics of the squirrels. I can't recommend this feeder enough!

So much entertainment!
My neighbors and I love to feed squirrels and we never even had any until one day in July 2013, one squirrel magically appeared. We are not a tree-lined street and the squirrels pass thru but never stay. I ran out and bought feeders (see my other reviews!) and they've been coming around ever since! My neighbor wanted to know if there was such a thing as a bird proof squirrel feeder and these munch boxes were the only thing I could think of. So they ordered this one. I work from home so they buy peanuts and I fill the box for them. It provides so much entertainment! And I know when the squirrel is here bec the metal lid slams shut and makes a clink noise. I've heard it at night so the rats have figured it out, too! Sadly, I am moving at the end of this month so I am going to have to get my own feeder!

Update on first review
I had this feeder for almost 6 years now and it still works great. it shows some wear and It does get a little rusty, but hasn't really gotten any worse since my first review. Just to comment on a couple of other reviews. I get a lot of the same Squirrels and I have never seen any with any raw spots from the lid. If the lid is working correctly and not obstructed it's easy for them to get into it without injury. Also, the lid does make a lot of noise when it slams shut. If that's a bother, just get some stick on weatherstripping and stick it to the underside of the lid. I did that about a year ago and it's still stuck to it and it's nice and quiet. We can't even hear them now and we get a lot of Squirrels and go through a big bottle of peanuts a day. As I said before, for the money it's a great feeder and well worth it. I still think this will last another 10 plus years easy.
