Replace wood perch
Squirrels are crafty critters. They chewed clear through the wooden perch (see photo), sat on top of the feeder resting front paws on metal edge holding seed and ate upside down. I replaced the wooden perch with a 12-inch long, threaded metal rod, 3/8 inch in diameter secured with a nut on each side purchased from the local big-box hardware store. (See photos) Because metal rod is heavier than the wood perch, I also had to adjust the wing-nut sliders on each side to balance the added weight. Knock on wood (!) the squirrels have not yet figured a way around this fix. Hmm, couldn't post photos, so use your imagination!

Engineering flaw
This is a great sturdy feeder with one design flaw. The floor is insufficiently sloped so that as the seeds are eaten, seed in the back doesn't flow forward, unless you reach in and sweep it into the tray by hand. I addressed this by using a piece of styrofoam to block the back half of the feeder, but that means it holds much less and needs to be refilled more often. Still, very popular with the sparrows and finches.

Had for 20 years
i have had this feeder for 20 years and the inside is shot the seed won't slide any more . Wow I got 20 years of great birding. besides the feeder a great trick is to use mostly hot seed. After a while the squirrels do not even try.

Some of the best money I ever spent.
I like to shop and buy a quality item all the time. I bought the original feeder maybe 25 to 30 years ago. It's still looks new. Before I bought it I used to go thru 350 to 450 pounds of seed each winter. After I put up the feeder I bought 150 and I had feed left over. So if you can handle the initial cost of this feeder it'll pay for itself in a year. One year I left it out too long and a bear got to it. The steel hook I got with the feeder was bent straight and the feeder was on the ground 20 feet down from my roof. It hand from an upper deck. The only damage was a broken perch. Hope this helps a possible buyer decide .

The birds love this feeder!
I purchased the original copper top feeder many years ago.It is no longer available. A rust spot finally made a hole in one bottom corner but I have covered it inside with a heavy brick. This worked. I do close mine up at night during warm weather cause our raccoons have engineering degrees. It is so easy to buy a dowel rod and replace the feeding bar! Of course the original would not last indefinitely, due to being made of wood..This is not a CON comment. A metal bar would be so cold to their feet so wood is BEST.You can also replace it with a small part of a branch, cut to length Just whittle the ends to fit into the feeder. I would love to buy another original one with this copper top and the very substantial mechanism for attaching to the pole, which is now much less substantial and a different design. This would be my negative about this feeder you now offer. The new ones is much lighter, and I do not like the way it just sits on top of the pole by means of a small short tube attached to the feeder. One would have to drill a hole and attach a screw to make it secure. The birds do fine with it though.as it is. i just have the original which was of a better design. Squirrels can also get into both by hanging on the side and keeping weight off the bar...difficult but mine do this even though they have plenty of feeders of their own provided. They seem to love a challenge and will not stop til they resolve it.
