Attract Woodpeckers

There are 180 species of woodpeckers worldwide, but they have one thing in common—they are irresistibly attracted to suet, especially with peanut or nut flavors. And they’ll also enjoy seed blends with nuts and peanut bits. Woodpeckers are well adapted for living their lives in trees. They have two toes pointing forward and two backward and use their stiff tails as a prop when climbing. And their long straight bills and long tongues work perfectly to drill insects out of the wood and also to excavate nesting cavities. Woodpeckers are considered a “core” bird because their abandoned nesting holes are necessary for so many other birds and animals to rear their own young, such as owls, flying squirrels, flycatchers, chickadees, bluebirds and swallows.
