Wire Ring Problem
I have 2 feeders but have now removed the wire ring that keeps larger birds away. I filled both feeders full before leaving for 2 weeks, thinking that would keep everyone fed while I was gone. Apparently it had rained almost the entire time. When I returned back home one feeder was completely empty but the one with the cage wire ring was 3/4 full. Upon inspection it was full of moldy wet seed in the bottom tray where the birds stand. The uneaten seed left by the birds had gotten wet from the rain and had turned moldy. I have removed the wire ring for easier cleaning and preventing this from happening again. Otherwise the seed above remains dry for the birds to remove. Save your money and just buy this feeder without the wire cage.

Merchant Response

It can take a while for birds to start entering a caged feeder. If they have a choice, they will always choose the easier feeder to enter. The cage is great if you want to keep out larger birds or squirrels, but if you don't need it, the birds are more comfortable without the cage.

This is my third one. Great for birds, but it yellows . . .
This is my third one. Lasts about 18 months, then yellows and cracks. I buy again because it is great for watching the birds. Need a pole baffle to keep squirrels out..

BEST Bird Feeder EVER!
In heavy wind the top screw will come off and mine fell to the ground about 15 feet and destroyed it. So, it requires periodic checking of the top screw to make sure it is tight. Otherwise, this is an excellent feeder and the seed does stay completely dry. To keep the starlings and grackles from reaching under and stealing the seed, I add an inch width of wire mesh around the top of the wire guard to keep the big birds from stealing seed.

The best feeder , I have 4! !
It needs a swivel to keep the screws from loosening when the wind blows

Pacific Northwest Solution
Recently purchased this feeder as other feeders could not withstand the frequent rain and wind. I live near the Columbia gorge and experience both, wind and heavy rain; very often sidewise blowing. We get infrequent snow but occasionally get brief snow flurries and more so ice storms. In fact, the day after I set up this feeder, we got a 6" snow and ice storm. The feeder was dry. The birds happy, I was happier than the birds, I think. I highly recommend getting the optional squirrel baffle, not so much to defeat squirrels, but to help the birds hang on to to reach the seed.
