I've swapped problems
I used large cup-shaped ant moats that effectively prevented ants. Despite having several water dishes for birds and critters, some birds loved to drink from my ant moats. This product totally solves the bird problem; however, it created a bee problem. Bees like to get in there to drink and then can't get out. Every honey bee is precious, and it is a bit of a mental puzzle to get live bees out of this moat. :-) Since my ants have no memory of hummingbird nectar, I closed up the hole to prevent bee entry. I love the design of this and would buy them again. I replaced the tiny S hook with a small carabiner.

My favorite ant moat
Used this for years. Fill with mineral oil or similar and you'll never have to refill it. The design ensures no birds will inadvertently drink the oil, and it won't get filled to the brim with dead bugs. Truly set it and forget it. Only complaint is sometimes, especially if too much weight, the plastic hook may break. Then you gotta replace. Still my favorite hands down.

Favorite ant moat
This is my favorite. I fill with mineral oil, which never has to be replaced since it doesn't evaporate, and not birds will mistakenly drink from it and no bugs will end up dead in it. Only complaint is that every so often, if there's too much weight, the plastic hook will break off and you'll have to replace. Still my fav.

clever design, but only for small ants
For small sugar ants, this might be effective. For the larger ants that were getting into my nectar feeders, this did nothing. The ants were long enough to span from the inside of the tube directly over to the hanging hook, bypassing the trip up to the moat entirely. I found a feeder full of ants, with not one in the moat.

Works Well for Ants and Yellowjackets
This is a quite effective ant moat, which was given to me as a gift. I've had a few ants get past it, but that's rare. It also traps wasps and yellowjackets (honey bees and bumble bees don't go near our feeders or this, so it's not a danger to them). Hanging it is not a problem: I use S-hooks to attach the feeder to the underside (flat side) and to hang from stake or branch. I've also attached strong fishing line to the top or bottom when I needed additional space or to hang from a branch (thin, strong fishing line is also an ant deterrent as it's very difficult for them to climb down). The only issue I have is that it is almost impossible to thoroughly clean this. It doesn't come apart and the various sized brushes I've tried don't work because I'm unable to bend the wire on the brushes to get to the area that holds the water. You also have to hold it on its side and shake it back and forth hard on to get the ants, etc. out. Despite these draw backs, it works very well. I can deal with it not being sparkling clean since birds and other critters can't get to the inner area.
