Watch woodpeckers feed upside down

Woodpeckers often forage in nature by clinging to the undersides of tree branches, while searching for a snack. Feeding upside down is natural for woodpeckers, and not preferred by starlings so your suet may last longer. Watch your smaller clinging birds feed on suet through the sturdy bottom grid. Includes cable hanger. Remove the bottom wire mesh grid for easy cleaning. Durable brown and burgundy recycled plastic. 6 inches wide square. 3-1/2 inches tall.

  • Holds 1 suet cake
  • Attract woodpeckers & watch them feed upside down
  • Features upside down feeding to restrict the number of suet-eating birds
  • Slide out the bottom grid to remove for filling
  • Made in the USA, available exclusively at Duncraft

Good but not blackbird proof
Product looks nice, is easy to setup and clean, and does get woodpeckers, nuthatches, etc. However, we bought this suet feeder because we were told blackbirds don't feed upside down. This is not true. We have Grackles that are able to feed upside down on this feeder. I don't know about Starlings. Unfortunately we had to take it down until the Grackles leave so it is really only good for winter use unless you like feeding Grackles.

Sparrows!
I bought this feeder to deter the House Sparrows from eating all of my suet and scaring off the woodpeckers from my regular cage feeder. I gave this a try and I loved the feeder at first and it always had high traffic from Nuthatches, Woodpeckers, Wrens etc. Now the House Sparrows have figured out how to hang upside down and again are eat everything and scare all the birds away. I am now looking for a new solution for a very menacing problem. This is still a nice feeder if you don't have greedy sparrows.

Does what it says, but....
I have two of these feeders but only use them in the winter because of the Grackles. Grackles are perfectly capable of hanging upside down to get suet and, in the summer, they ate the majority of the suet in these feeders. They do work great in the winter, whey the Grackles are gone, to keep the suet for the woodpeckers. This is also not a squirrel proof feeder unless it is sited above a squirrel baffle and eight feet from anywhere a squirrel can jump from (which mine are).
