Actually squirrel proof, but hard for some little birds
The squirrels have tried climbing all over this, with no success. This is the only feeder I've ever owned that is actually squirrel proof. The chickadees and titmice love it, but sometimes have trouble getting seeds out of the feeder, landing and pecking at it but leaving empty handed. I've been using black oil sunflower, might try switching to something else or a mix.

Rebecca loves Woodpeckers
Owned this for over 10 years....would buy again!
I have owned this feeder for at least 10 years and it has never let me down. I have had squirrels in multiple locations try to outwit this feeder and they haven't done it yet. If this one ever plays out, I will definitely get another. It is easy to wash out and allows my nuthatches, chickadees, finches, woodpeckers, titmice, cardinals, and more to feed easily. This is a fantastic product!

Perfect for peanuts or peanut suet nuggets
I love this for peanuts or peanut suet nuggets. They don't fall out unless you overfill or aren't careful pouring them in. The little metal tab on top keeps squirrels from opening it and they can't reach through the bars to get at the nuggets inside.

The absolutely BEST birdfeeder
I live in a forest. I have scads of birds and other furry wildlife. I hang 8 or more bird feeders around my home. The birds let me know which one they like best, and this one is it. The squirrels and chipmunks have chewed the green vinyl off of the cage around it as they continually try, unsuccessfully, to get at the seeds. But my biggest challenge with bird feeders has been black bears. I can't even begin to tell you how many feeders I have lost to Bruno. But, this Duncraft feeder has out lasted them all. This feeder has survived multiple bear attacks. It is very misshapen, very lopsided, kind of ugly, but it works just fine. My birds rate it #1 and so do I!

Great for Woodpeckers; Squirrels are Frustrated
I filled this with woodpecker mix (mostly nuts) and added the Super Seed Tray to catch spillage. For a few weeks, it seemed that every squirrel in the neighborhood came by to check it out. They try to open the top, reach in from the side with their paws, swing/shake it, and even chew their way through the outer layer. All were thwarted and now the squirrels don't even come around. Most frequent visitors are red-bellied woodpeckers and downy woodpeckers. They cling vertically to the outside and reach in to the feed. Small birds like finches can perch on the outside and stick their entire head in to reach the feed. Doesn't work for the larger cardinals and jays, who just stop by occasionally and maybe pick up something from the seed tray. Without the squirrels pillaging, it holds plenty of seed so I only refill about every 1-2 weeks.
