Great for raccoons too!
I've had a couple of these on hand for many years now, and they're great!. My old ones had been through many, many bear and raccoon attacks, and I was left with one really beat up suet cage that had been so beat up that any squirrel could just slide the top over to get inside. Then I started having trouble with raccoons doing the same thing. It was time for a new one. I got my new one 4 days ago and happily filled it and put it out, assured that I'd stumped the raccoon. Today I got up, and the suet cage was missing. After my husband & I had both searched the property, I went back out to look into harder-to-get-to areas, and after crawling in under a whole lot of bushes, I finally found the suet cage. It was intact, and the suet was still inside. So the raccoon pulled the cage down, dragged it to a safe place, and tried probably all night long to get into it, with no luck. Now the suet cage is back out hanging in the same place, with an old dog leash attaching it to a 4x4 post. Now if the raccoon wants to try to get to the suet, he'll have to do it in place and I won't have to crawl under bushes to retrieve it. Do you think I've outsmarted the raccoon? Time will tell. Oh, and while red squirrels can and do get into this cage because of their smaller size, the gray squirrels cannot. We like having the red squirrels around, and to be honest this suet cage is hung where it is because it's a place that's easily accessible to our red squirrels. We've had serious problems with gray squirrels in the past, so they are not welcome in our yard, and they are the ones who cannot get into this feeder. If you want something that will keep larger squirrels out, this is your suet cage. However if you have raccoons around, be sure to secure it in place.

Really does keep squirrels out
Really does keep squirrels out and the birds like it a lot. The squirrels did try to chew through the metal but could not. Unfortunately, did not stand up against raccoons... they were able to pull it off of a shepherd's crook and mangle it enough to get the suet out. However, if you don't have any issues with raccoons the feeder should be fine.

Small alteration made a big improvement
This feeder kept the squirrels out for the first 3 years no problem. Unfortunately, this year, a squirrel we named Einstein figured out he could reach into the suet chamber from the top and the bottom with his paw and scoop out the suet (my homemade suet is fairly soft). My husband added a hinged metal cover to the top of the chamber and a piece of metal on the inside of the bottom part of the chamberband the squirrel can't get in anymore. This feeder is very durable and tough. We still like it a lot!

Still not squirrel proof!
Last year, this suet feeder foiled the squirrels. It was amusing to watch them unsuccessfully reach in and not have any success. This year, however, a new squirrel has come along, very young, and gobbles up the two suets in a few days. He/she reaches all the way in, from the top and bottom, and scrapes the suet into his paws and has a feast. I will try your similar suet feeder with the solid metal top and bottom making the access impossible for the squirrels. Let's hope that works! Fortunately, we don't have crows or grackles to contend with. I would not recommend this to a friend but would recommend the one with the solid top and bottom.
