It worked!
I have a caged suet feeder and the large "nuisance" birds perch on the top, reach inside and peck away. Some really determined starlings/grackles manage to hang onto the sides of the caged feeder and they devour the suet. THIS feeder has deterred the big birds (pigs with wings!) My downy woodpeckers are perfectly content: they can hang on and eat. Also, I feed hot pepper suet and the squirrels no longer even try.

A little too wide
We had the cage type suet feeder prior to this purchase. The birds were finishing off a suet cake every other day. When we saw this one with the finer mesh, we had to try it. Overall, it was a good purchase. It is very sturdy and looks nice. With the narrow spaces in the mesh, the larger birds no longer frequent this feeder. Now we mainly get woodpeckers on this feeder. The "problem" with this feeder is the birds' beaks can't get as far into the feeder. That means as the the birds eat, they eat off what they can, but the middle of the suet cake can't be reached once the birds have eaten all they can from each side. We found we have so push the remaining suet to one side of the mesh or the other, or push it down so it reaches both ends. This has helped immensely. The other issue we have with this feeder is that it is not easy to clean. Overall we are happy enough with this feeder, but there is defintely room to improve it.

No thieving squirrels
I had a standard suet cake basket, but the squirrels were raiding it and I was going through suet cakes at an alarming rate. I didn't want a cage-type squirrel-proof suet feeder because I was concerned that the larger woodpeckers, such as the hairy, would not be able to reach the suet. This feeder works as advertised. The mesh prevents the squirrels from scooping it out but larger woodpeckers can still feed. A suet cake lasts much longer because the birds can only peck out a little at a time due to the mesh. I expected a squirrel to try and lift up the top, but so far that hasn't happened. It fills easily -- just lift the top and drop in a cake.
