At any time we see 4 to 10 squirrels-gray and red-leaping from tree to tree and climbing my suet pole to consume every suet cake I put out. However, thanks to my new Tough Bird feeder guard, that has ceased. On the first day, one or two squirrels climbed the pole and were shocked into the atmosphere like a NASA shuttle. Evidently, they communicate with each other, because none have tried since. As a result, our bird population can enjoy the suet to their hearts' content. Chickadees, titmice, white-breasted nuthatches, Carolina wrens, downies & hairies, red-bellied woodpeckers and even a northern flicker now and then can be seen at our suet feeder. Sparrows, juncos, grackles, bluejays and cardinals clean up the ground below.
