A Very Good Looking Poor Design
I bought two of these. They are not cheap. They look good and appear well made. Compared with the previous suet feeders I was using, the mesh is much finer. This design severely limits which birds are able to access the suet. For example, the Orioles have gone away. And worse, the birds that can penetrate the mesh are unable to reach most of the suet blocks after a short time as they become recessed inside the feeder. So the blocks are sitting in the feeder, and shorter billed Woodpeckers are no longer able to reach. I am going back to my old suet feeders. Maybe the blocks will not last as long, but at least I will be able to enjoy watching the birds. This was an expensive lesson.

Merchant Response

These feeders are great when you're dealing with greedy critters gorging on the suet -- if that's not a problem in your yard, these may not be the best feeders for you. We want our customers to be happy with our products so we offer a full one-year guarantee on all of our products. You're welcome to send them back for a full refund or exchange for a different feeder!

Didn't know how much we needed this
We have always had suet cakes out for our birds, using regular wire cages. This attracts a variety of birds including nuthatches, chickadees, woodpeckers, creepers and of course the jays. I didn't realize how much suet we were going through until we bought this feeder, and another caged suet feeder for the little birds. I have not seen the jays even approach this feeder, and it almost always has someone on it. Duncraft is right to say that the suet lasts longer-it truly does!!! So my favorite birds are getting all the suet they want, the bully birds can't get to it, and I don't have to put new suet out every other day. Definitely a must. And, it is attractive-has nice clean lines and is perfect for our yard!

Woodpeckers love it, so do squirrels
Received this a week ago and immediately filled it with one suet cake topped with loose shelled red peanuts. Found that my suet cakes do not quite fit into the slot at the top. The opening needs to be about 1/4-inch more (long dimension). The top bar/lid simply sits on the top of the feeder and is not fastened down. I thought this would be an issue with the squirrels, but they didn't try to lift the lid. Instead they clung to the wire mesh and were able to poke their noses into the mesh enough to get at the suet. It took them about 1/2 day to figure this out. They seem to enjoy the tail-prop as much as the birds do. They also have gnawed large chunks out of the red plastic sides below the mesh. I found bits of red plastic all over the ground. I would recommend extending the mesh wrap another 1-inch below suet cavity. I've switched to the spicy suet and so far that is helping. The birds do love this feeder - it's been busy with downies, red-bellied wp's and chickadees all day.

Bully Birds Still A Problem
This is our third suet feeder and while the Woodpeckers and Nuthatches like it to say that it prevents the bully birds from gorging is untrue. Starlings, grackles, and other bully's spend more time eating suet and peanuts than the Woodpeckers.

Finally, a squirrel proof, non-deadly suet feeder
This is my 4th suet feeder. First was destroyed by a raccoon, so now we bring feeders in at night. 2nd was made with wood, which squirrels eventually gnawed through. I have tried covering suet cakes with cayenne pepper, but squirrels treat it like Spicey Mexican food. My 3rd feeder was metal, two cake capacity, but squirrels emptied it every day by 10 AM. I checked out squirrel-proof feeders, with double cages, but was put off by reviews which said that birds could get caught in them and die, or birds were too cautious to enter them. This feeder is a brilliant solution: smaller squares! Squirrels give up on it. Downies found it right away. I stuck a chopstick through one of the bottommost open squares (just the right size to hold a chopstick) to provide a perch for small birds which aren't used to eating on a vertical surface, like nuthatches and woodpeckers are.
